Pleasant coastal breezes throughout the summer season make for a great outdoors lifestyle on Bald Head Island. Golf, sail, kayak, hike the trails or climb Old Baldy Lighthouse for spectacular views of the island and lagoons.
Play a round at the award-winning golf course on Bald Head Island, which winds over dunes, lagoons and maritime forest. During turtle nesting season, join a naturalist on a walk to observe and learn about sea turtles.
Beaches
Beaches are a staple of any vacation, and Bald Head Island activities with miles of soft sand offer something for everyone. South Beach, home to most of the island’s early development, is a prime spot for swimming and sunbathing.
East Beach offers a quieter alternative to the bustling South. This area is bordered by a marsh and tidal creek that slowly changes color throughout the day, and provides a tranquil place to watch wildlife from a distance.
Rent everything you need for the beach (golf carts, surfboards, umbrellas) at the rental shops and kiosks near the ferry terminal. Then spend the day golfing, sailing or paddleboarding. Climb Old Baldy Lighthouse or explore the island’s protected wetlands and maritime forest through programs offered by the BHI Conservancy. Then grab a bite to eat at Jules’ Salty Grub and Island Pub. Or, slip next door to Delphina Cantina for Latin-inspired dishes and margaritas.
Hiking
If you want to get out and explore the island by foot, there are plenty of trails to choose from. The Bald Head Woods Maritime Forest Preserve has a number of hiking and walking trails, including the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail, which offers great views of the marsh. You can also take a guided hike through the reserve or on a nature walk with the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
The Conservancy’s tours are family-friendly and will teach you all about the flora and fauna of the preserve so you can really learn about this incredible ecosystem. If you’d like to try something a bit more adventurous, Riverside Adventure has Geocaching treasure hunts, kayaking excursions and fishing trips available throughout the year.
Of course, no trip to Bald Head Island is complete without some time soaking up the sun on the beach. With miles of beautiful beaches and a thriving ecosystem to explore, it’s easy to see why this North Carolina destination is so special. After all the fun outside, you’ll need a chance to relax and recharge.
Kayaking
A secluded barrier island off the coast of Southport, Bald Head Island is a summertime outdoor enthusiasts dream. From golfing to sailing and surfing to kayaking, the island offers an abundance of ways for families to enjoy all that nature has to offer.
Explore tidal creeks and salt marshes along one of the many island trails. The Coastal Forest Trail, located at the southern end of Federal Road, is perfect for walking, jogging, or biking and offers plenty to see including Bald Eagle nests, Osprey perches, and other coastal wildlife.
The Coastal Marsh Trail is also a great option for hiking enthusiasts, offering a scenic, easy-going experience that allows you to take in the islands natural beauty. This 2-mile loop offers a mix of sand dunes, salt marshes, and maritime forests. Explore the trail solo or with a guide from the Bald Head Island Conservancy who can help you navigate off the beaten path and identify all the plants and animals you may encounter along the way.
Sailing
When you get to the island, it’s important to know what to expect and how to get around. No cars are allowed on the island, so rent a golf cart or bike at the Dockmaster Convenience Store at the Bald Head Island Marina (VHF for space assignment).
Explore the winding creeks and tidal creeks with a kayak rental from Coastal Urge, East Beach Surf Shop, Riverside Adventure Co., or a boat charter from Jive or Joyride. If you’re looking for a more guided experience, join the tours offered by the Bald Head Island Conservancy, where expert naturalists teach you all about the island’s flora and fauna. Enjoy a nature hike or birding expedition, or try your hand at marsh crabbing or fishing with the kids.
Hop on the Bald Head Island Passenger Ferry, which departs Southport and the island multiple times each day. Once on the island, grab a bite to eat at Sandpiper Coffee for a quick pick-me-up or sit down for Latin cuisine and seafood at Delphina Cantina. You’ll find groceries and other supplies at Maritime Market, and for a frozen treat, check out Jailhouse Provisions or Jules’ Salty Grub Island Pub.
Fishing
The shallow Frying Pan Shoals - which has claimed more than its share of ships over the years - roils the water, drawing schools of drum, flounder and trout close to shore. The marsh system also holds fish all year, with the winter season offering up a bounty of redfish and speckled trout. The marina dock master can fill you in on local fishing tips, arrange a slip for your boat and recommend a fishing guide.
The half-mile Kent Mitchel Nature Trail offers great views and a leisurely stroll. Then, grab a kayak, canoe or paddleboard from Coastal Urge or East Beach Surf Shop and explore the island's winding creeks and salt marshes. You'll find plenty of wildlife, too, since 80 percent of the island is a preserve.
If you'd rather take in the view from atop Old Baldy Lighthouse, climb its 108 steps. Cars aren't allowed on the island, so rent a golf cart or bicycle from one of many companies, including Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Co., or bring your own.
